  5. So, when Google and YouPorn launched, the internet had two different values for usefulness simultaneously?
    This graph sucks.

  11. this is the coolest graph EVER!

    Comment by joe — November 3, 2008 @ 10:02 am

  12. Dear “sigh”,

    The bottom axis is time.

    Regards,

    Everyone else.

    Comment by Jordan — November 3, 2008 @ 10:03 am

  13. try not taking it so seriously and maybe you’ll figure it out. Google launched –> usefulness goes up and up. YouPorn launched –> usefulness goes down and down. Get it? YouPorn lowers the usefulness because…oh, f it.

    Comment by heyidiots — November 3, 2008 @ 10:06 am

  14. Dear “Jordan”,

You may want to review grade 9 math.

    Comment by dicks — November 3, 2008 @ 10:08 am

  15. Appreciate it for its humour and insight!!! That is piss funny!!! Nice work!!! What i dont like, is the school-teacher-mentality of these negative comments who seem to be more preoccupied with “Oh, it is not pretty, so I’ll ignore the message/humour”. Gee, its lucky you didn’t spell anything wrong or the world might have stopped.. or worse… it could have been turned into a Seinfeld episode.

    Comment by Bob — November 3, 2008 @ 10:15 am

  16. Dear “jordan,”

“sigh” knew the bottom axis was time. he’s referring to how the points at t = google release and t = youporn release are both closed, meaning the usefulness value exists at both of those points. that means at the same time, the usefulness has two values. one of the points should be an open circle. either way, it’s still a funny graph.

    Regards.

    Comment by kyle — November 3, 2008 @ 10:15 am

  17. It should have been “Productivity”, not “Usefulness”.

    Comment by anon — November 3, 2008 @ 10:17 am

  18. technically… sigh is correct, since one of the 2 points at t=”google launch” and at t=”youporn launch” should be ‘open’ / a hollow circle. otherwise, at either of those two points in time, there would be TWO values for the usefulness of the internet, which, as pf points out, does not represent a function.

    Comment by BS — November 3, 2008 @ 10:18 am

  19. To Jordan: the bottom axis being time doesn’t negate the fact that there are 2 values for USEFULNESS at a single point in time. /me recommends a wikipedia search for “algebraic function”

    Comment by gravisman — November 3, 2008 @ 10:18 am

  20. @Brian

No they’re just saying it’s not funny, and being the nerds they most probably are, were pointing out the flaws of his hand-drawn graph.

    Comment by ... — November 3, 2008 @ 10:22 am

  21. Dear sigh,

Just because a graph doesn’t express a function doesn’t mean it sucks.

    Dear Jordan,

If the dots are filled, those points are considered on the graph. If the dots are empty, they are not.

    Please don’t speak for us.

    Regards,

    Comment by Everyone else — November 3, 2008 @ 10:26 am

  22. Thanks for the comments guys!

Next time will have one point an open circle. //remembering back to function class at school

@anon: Yeah, probably should have been “Productivity”.

    Comment by SomeGuy — November 3, 2008 @ 12:37 pm

  37. For all you vertical line test believers:

    Google/Wikipedia search “implicit functions”…

    For your enlightenment:

    I present the implicit function:
    x^2+y^2 = r (Radius)
Its a circle. Fails your line test but its a function.

The point: Who CARES (and how one can over use: the semi:colon)

    Comment by Zuluu — November 3, 2008 @ 2:47 pm

  46. Sigh.
    Read the graph, AGAIN.

AVERAGE is sum of components over number of components.
Google represents a “large proportion” of that “sum” agreed?

Therefore when Google is established, the AVERAGE usefulness of internet jumps to a new high, as the proportion of it is actually useful… but why? ( useful for what? )

When youporn is introduced however, Google, the “large proportion” suddenly becomes less useful, ( for what? 😛 ) and therefore the average is much lower.

The “curve” represents switching from resorting to google, to youporn. 😛

    That’s my analysis anyway. 😀

    Comment by derek shirtington — November 3, 2008 @ 4:35 pm

  50. You might want to reconsider this graph… it’s not unreasonable to argue that much of what people use the internet for today is possible precisely because of the early popularity of internet porn. Consider: who needed high speed connections and good graphics in 1996? Who was downloading lots of high-quality video in the early days of the http protocol? You don’t need that stuff to get Alice in Wonderland from Gutenberg.org, folks….
I don’t know if the smut crowd is really pushing so many envelopes these days, but if you enjoy youtube today, it’s because someone wanted dirty pictures ten years ago.

    Comment by Jon Kiparsky — November 3, 2008 @ 5:00 pm

  51. @34:
From the Wikipedia article you recommended:
Not every equation R(x,y) = 0 has a graph that is the graph of a function, the circle equation being one prominent example. Another example is an implicit function given by x – C(y) = 0 where C is a cubic polynomial having a “hump” in its graph. Thus, for an implicit function to be a true function it might be necessary to use just part of the graph.

Implicit functions do not negate the vertical line test. The equation of a circle, as that wiki article states, is not a function.

    Also, semi-colons look like this: ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

You all need to relax and learn to laugh a little more. You seem a little uptight. So what if the world’s going to hell and a joke ranks high.
